눈으로 뒤덮여 있어야 할 모스크바. 크레믈린 궁전 앞에는 파란 잔디가 조금씩 돋아나 있다. 모스크바 주민들은 이와 같이 눈이 오지 않는 겨울을 본 적이 없다.

프랑스 동부 지역에서는 장미꽃이 피었고, 불가리아 사람들은 섭씨 17도 따뜻한 흑해 해변에서 일광욕을 즐기고 있다. 네덜란드에서는 크로커스의 싹이 돋기 시작했고 새들이 둥지를 틀기 시작했다. 전문가들은 알레르기에 약한 오스트리아 사람들에게 일부 수종은 이미 꽃을 피우고 있어 곧 꽃가루를 날리려 한다고 경고했다. 이러한 꽃가루가 날리는 현상은 대개 매년 완연한 봄이 되어야 나타나게 된다. 제 철에 맞지 않는 유럽의 온난한 겨울이 범상치 않다. 

봄기운이 너무 돌아 유럽의 많은 사람들은 “겨울이 어디 갔을까” 하며 의아해 한다. 누구의 탓으로 돌려야 하는 것인지. 많은 사람들의 생각처럼 지구 온난화가 그 주범일까?

Roses bloomed in eastern France. Bulgarians basked in the sun on balmy 17C Black Sea beaches. In the Netherlands, crocuses started sprouting and birds began nesting. Experts warned allergy-prone Austrians that some species of trees are already flowering and about to release pollen _ an annual phenomenon that's usually not a problem until well into spring.

Europe's unseasonably mild winter is nothing to sneeze at.

With so much spring in the air, many Europeans wonder: Where's winter? And more importantly, what's to blame: global warming, as many suspect?
